The Department of Physics offers graduate study and research leading to the M.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Typically only students intending to pursue a PhD are accepted into the program.
The department has 31 full-time faculty and a dozen adjuncts from nearby Jefferson Lab and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). The research areas include atomic, molecular, and optical physics, computational physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear and particle physics, and plasma and non-linear physics; accelerator physics (in cooperation with Jefferson Lab); and atmospheric physics and material characterization (in cooperation with NASA-LaRC).
In many areas, computational approaches are heavily relied upon to complement experimental and analytical methods.
