Admissions
The CSC and affiliated departments/schools are actively seeking highly motivated graduate students to participate in computational science. Prospective degree students will apply to a CSC-affiliated department/school with their computational science interest noted on the application. Each department/school will then review the applications consistent with its admission policies.
Qualifications:
At the time of admission, a typical CSC graduate student will have an
undergraduate degree in a science-oriented discipline with a significant
mathematical component. Examples include but are not limited to applied
mathematics, chemistry, computer science, engineering and physics. In
addition, significant prior experience with computer programming in a
high-level language will be expected.
Curriculum Requirements:
PhD students will have their plan of study approved by the Executive
Committee of the CSC. They will be expected to take at least three
courses outside of their home department, at least two of which will be
chosen from a list of approved courses provided by each department. For
example, a student in the physics department might select two computational
science courses from the list of approved courses offered by the computer
science department and two elective courses offered by the applied science
department.
MS students will also have their plan of study approved by the Executive Committee. They will be expected to take at least two courses outside of their home department, one from the approved list and one elective.
Thesis Requirements:
The PhD thesis must incorporate computation in a creative way, either by
developing an enabling computational technology, or by using such
technologies to obtain a significant scientific result. The thesis plan
must be approved by the student's thesis committee, at least one member of
which must be outside of the student's department. The director of the CSC
will serve on all such committees. In addition, the thesis advisor must be
a member of the CSC's affiliated faculty. All other thesis requirements
will be consistent with the student's department.
